Cubist Tabletop

A brilliantly executed and striking mid-century cubist still life that presents an arrangement of objects distilled into bold, geometric forms, painted in oil onto canvas.

At the centre, a single red rose rises sharply from a faceted brown vase, its angular green leaves echoing the crystalline structure of the surrounding elements. Beside it, a vivid blue jug rendered in interlocking planes stands with sculptural presence, while a small angular fruit or object rests upon a two-toned plate in the foreground.

The composition is a masterful exercise in cubist reduction, where natural forms are translated into prismatic shapes. The background is similarly fragmented into overlapping planes of muted lilac, teal, and yellow, lending the scene a sense of depth and dynamism while maintaining strict flatness.

The palette balances earthy browns and greys with vibrant accents of cobalt blue, emerald green, and a sharp pop of crimson. The brushstrokes are controlled and deliberate, applied in clean, even planes of colour without visible texture, emphasising structure over gesture.

This oil on canvas is housed in a very well-suited frame with an outer linen border and an inner cream window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame does have some scuffing but is in good vintage condition overall.
