Cubist Street

A mid-century painting presents a quiet street rendered through a modernist lens, where architectural forms unfold along a gently receding road, and  executed in oil onto board.

Arched doorways, small staircases, and balcony details hint at a southern European setting, while stylised trees punctuate the scene with a sense of warmth and calm. The composition draws the eye inward, inviting the viewer to wander through this tranquil, almost dreamlike streetscape.

This structured work shows clear Cubist and geometric abstract influences, particularly in the faceted treatment of buildings and ground planes. Forms are broken into angular segments and overlapping geometric shapes, flattening perspective while simultaneously creating depth.

A muted yet expressive palette anchors the composition, with warm terracotta, blush pink, sandy beige, and soft browns tones contrasted against cool greys and dusty blues. Accents of green in the foliage introduce freshness and visual rhythm.

Brushstrokes are visible and purposeful, applied in broad, confident planes rather than fine detail. The layered paint application enhances the faceted Cubist structure, with tonal shifts used to suggest light, shadow, and architectural depth. The surface retains a gently textured, painterly quality that adds warmth and movement to the geometric composition.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary wood frame with an inner linen lining. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has a few minor scuffs.
