A bold and expressive mid-century modernist figurative composition, painted in oil and gouache onto board by the established Swedish female artist Brita Hansson (1918-1979).
The painting depicts two seated female figures in vivid red garments, engaged in quiet dialogue or mutual contemplation. Their forms are abstracted, rendered without facial features, allowing posture and colour to convey mood and intimacy.
The painting bursts with saturated reds, deep purples, and yellows, offset by bold swathes of white and textured brushwork that creates a dynamic, almost rhythmic background. The foreground is punctuated by gestural strokes of lilac, grey-blue, and orange, suggesting fruit or textiles on a table.
Executed confidently and swiftly, the brushstrokes are layered and gestural, giving the piece a tactile quality as well as lively feel.
This oil and gouache on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs.
