Courtyard Bench
SOLD.
A poignant and emotionally charged mid-century composition, executed in oil onto board in 1956.
The painting captures a melancholic scene of a courtyard with desolate land, nestled within a row of houses.
A solitary female figure sits on a bench near the edge of the courtyard and in the foreground of the painting. Her presence evokes a sense of contemplation and solitude, and the striking contrast of the blue bench captures our attention.
The artist has used a limited and subdued colour palette of muted greys and whites, contributing to the somber atmosphere.
This oil on board is housed in a distressed wooden frame which suits the painting’s colours beautifully. There is a small spot of paint loss to the painting, as shown in close ups. The frame has areas of paint loss too, and there are marks present particularly to the lower edge of the frame. Nevertheless, this is in keeping with the distressed style. There is a small pin hole to the frame slip, as shown in the close up.
