A typically modernist mid century large abstract oil, painted onto board in 1960. The artist has created a completely abstract picture, playing with form, line, shape and colour. He has used a fairly restrained palette, working mostly in brown, black and white. This painting is very remiscnent of the works by British Modern St Ives artist Ben Nicholson, whose abstract drawings and paintings featured flat shapes and lines and an absence of ornament. Nicholson would also often use a razor blade to scrape back the paint so that the pictures look weather beaten and old, as if they have been eroded by time, much like the artist has done here in the white section of the painting, creating varied areas of both textured and flat surfaces.
The painting is housed in a simple but very well suited black slip. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.
Size: 55 x 77 cm (including frame)
