A very well executed mid century coastalscape composition in oil, painted in 1948.
Painted with broad, expressive brushwork in a semi abstract manner, this composition has a very distinctive feature – its red beach. Although the location is not specified, it could quite possibly be a depiction of the red sand beach in Santorini in Greece. The artist has used a deep and rich colour palette, with strokes that convey the ruggedness and vigour of the coastline. The area of red punctuates the centre of the composition, creating a focal point for the viewer’s eye. As we shift our focus to the right, we begin to notice the layering and blending of all the various colours that the artist has used. The composition seems to go on far into the horizon, capturing the expanse of the natural landscape.
The painting is housed in a stunning wood frame with visible grain, and with an inner and outer gilt window. Both frame and painting are in excellent vintage condition.
