Ceremony of Colour

A striking mid-century abstract figurative painting that depicts a rhythmic procession of five women walking across an open, sun-washed landscape, painted in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish female artist Brita Hansson (1918-1979).

Each figure balances a vessel upon her head, their elongated forms moving in quiet unison against a soft expanse of sky and sand. Though simplified and abstracted, the figures retain a powerful presence.

Rendered in a distinctly modernist style, the composition balances figuration with abstraction. The bodies are constructed from bold, angular planes of colour rather than detailed anatomy, creating a dynamic interplay between structure and spontaneity.
