Blue Ballerinas

An outstanding mid-century figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden.

The painting captures a scene of two ballerinas in striking blue tutus and ballet shoes, surrounded by an abstract background. On the ballerinas, the artist’s brushstrokes are gentle and soft, reflecting a careful attention to detail. Intentionally working with a limited colour palette, the artist has reduced the area around the ballerinas to angular planes in different gradients of brown. The layout of flat shapes and planes are typical of Lundqvist’s style.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner cream border. The painting has a light surface mark at its lower central area of painting (as shown), but the painting is overall in good vintage condition. There is a small nick to inner border of the frame, as shown.
