Birches in Autumn

An atmospheric and wonderfully textured mid-century abstract landscape depicting a dense woodland of slender, pale tree trunks rising rhythmically across the composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

The vertical forms create a strong architectural quality, while glimpses of muted foliage and the warm forest floor emerge between them. Rather than describing the woodland literally, the artist reduces the scene to an interplay of vertical lines, fragmented planes and earthy blocks of colour.

The work has a distinctly modernist, semi-abstract character, balancing recognisable natural forms with a highly simplified treatment of space. Perspective is deliberately flattened, with trees, foliage and ground compressed into overlapping shapes. The repetition of the elongated trunks establishes a compelling rhythm across the canvas, giving the painting a quiet sense of movement and depth.

The palette is beautifully restrained and atmospheric. Chalky whites, silvery greys and soft blue-grey define the tree trunks, set against deeper passages of charcoal, forest green, muted teal, russet and earthy brown. Across the forest floor, warmer notes of ochre, mustard, burnt orange and terracotta introduce an autumnal warmth that contrasts wonderfully with the cooler upper half of the composition.

The paint has been applied with broad, confident and visibly textured brushstrokes. Loose diagonal strokes build the foliage into angular masses, while longer vertical gestures articulate the trunks. Areas of dry, scumbled paint allow underlying tones and the texture of the surface to remain visible, lending the work a wonderfully tactile, spontaneous quality. The combination of gestural brushwork and carefully structured vertical forms gives the painting both energy and compositional harmony.

This oil on canvas is presented in  a complementary slim gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs.
