Ballerinas by Moonlight

An outstanding mid-century figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden.

The painting captures a scene of two ballerinas under moonlight. They appear to be on an outdoor stage, and the artist has captured the evening scene in a very elegant manner, using muted tones of brown and blueish greens to capture the moonlit glow.

The artist’s brushstrokes are gentle and soft, reflecting a careful attention to detail and a desire to capture the quiet beauty of the moment. Intentionally working with a limited colour palette comprising subdued shades, the painting creates a mysterious and atmospheric ambiance. Details such as the small but striking red lips of the figure in the foreground, as well as the layout of flat shapes and planes are typical of Lundqvist’s style.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary champagne frame with an inner linen as well as cream-coloured border. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some age toning to the linen border, and some scuffs and marks, as shown in close ups.
