These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

    A richly coloured mid century modernist style composition, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Stig Wernheden (1921-1997), whose works have been represented at public collections in Sweden including the Moderna Museet, Malmö Museum, Snuff & Match Museum, Ystad Art Museum and Malmö City Hall.

    In this scene we see the back of a figure on a donkey, walking towards a town in the distance. Lush greenery and verges on either side frame the composition, leading our eyes inwards towards the figure.

    The painting features wonderful pops of colour, including bright blue and orange. The artist has worked in a modernist style, using formal elements such as shapes and contrasting colours to create depth within the composition. The artist’s adeptness with his medium is evident in his clever use of colours and forms, and in the way he has achieved such balance in the composition.

    Distinctively modernist in style, the artist here has played with shape, form and colour to build up this composition of boats in a port. The long repetitive lines of the masts juxtapose against the rectangular and circular shapes on the boats, as well as the triangular shapes of the sails. These distinct shapes then contrast again with the more fluid forms of the reflection in the water. The artist applies broader, and more expressive strokes to the area of reflection, whereas the top half of the composition is more controlled and form focused.

    This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs as shown in close ups.
