Cairo

SOLD.

A large and very textured mid century modernist composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

Depicted here is a large monument in Cairo, Egypt. This location has been inscribed on the reverse. We believe it could be the Ibn Tulun Mosque which is situated in the heart of Cairo, and has a similar architectural layout and form. The artist has focused on the geometric forms of the monument’s walls, abstracting it down to large white blocks with bold outlines. In the distance we also see the minaret, which is central to the overall composition and creates a focal point for our eyes. The artist has also added an aggregate to the surface, creating a very textured composition, with areas of thickly applied paint.

The painting is dated to the bottom left, but the inscription is quite indistinct. From what we can see, it appears to be ’60.

This large oil on canvas is housed in a very well-suited wood frame with inner linen-lined windows. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some slight age wear but is in good condition overall.
