A very confidently executed mid century abstract modernist composition in oil, painted in 1964.
This distinctly expressionist piece is characterised by free, gestural brushwork, and the paint application is generous and highly textured. Each area of colour appears distinct but yet flows seamlessly into the next, creating this very harmonious composition. The painting has a lot of depth, with several areas of impasto, where the paint has been applied thickly such that it stands proud from the surface.
Although its subject appears to be entirely abstract, there is a sense that the natural landscape is the source of inspiration.
The painting is housed in a very unique and textured grey frame which suits it very well. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
