The Dancer
SOLD.
A distinctly modernist oil portrait of an African female figure in tribal dress, painted in 1959.
Deep and rich planes of colours fill the canvas, with angular forms and distinct lines building up into a semi abstract portrait. We see the figure in side profile, arms and legs in the midst of movement. The artist teases our eye – we are unable to discern where her dress and legs end, and where the background begins. Angled planes of white surrounding the figure illuminate her upper body, skilfully narrowing our eyes towards the main figure, before then dispersing as the body and background become indistinguishable.
The surface of the painting has also been coated with a layer of varnish. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork. Do not that some glare is present in the photographs.
This oil on board is housed in a wood frame that pairs perfectly with the painting. There are areas of light craquelure across the painting commensurate with its age, but is in good vintage condition overall.
Size: 58 x 37 cm (including frame)
