Sunset Mosaic Coastline

A vibrant and playful mid-century coastal landscape capturing the sun as it dips toward the horizon, painted in oil by the established Swedish artist Uno Vallman (1913-2004) whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum and The Swedish Modern Museum, to name a few. His works are also included in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and the Tessin Institute in Paris.

This expressive work presents a joyful, almost rhythmic interpretation of a seaside scene. Two stylised birch-like trees frame the composition, their graphic black outlines and emerald foliage creating a lively archway that guides the viewer’s gaze toward the glowing red sun and shimmering water beyond. The shoreline curves gently into view, rendered in warm sandy yellows and soft greens that lend the scene a welcoming, idyllic quality.

Containing elements of fauvism and expressionism, this striking painting is characterised by its rich colours and playful repetition of marks and a mosaic-like scattering of forms across the sky and sea. The artist has used bold, looping linework and patchwork colour fields to create a sense of movement – waves ripple in textured dashes of white, coral, and blue, while the sky hums with pink and powder-blue strokes interspersed with touches of gold.

The palette is delightfully energetic: fresh greens, sky blues, pastel pinks, bright whites, and vivid reds work in harmony to create a composition that feels both spontaneous and carefully orchestrated. Brushstrokes are short, layered, and expressive, giving the surface a highly tactile quality and echoing the lively energy of the natural world reimagined through a mid-century modern lens.
