A large and very well executed mid century modernist portrait in oil, painted onto canvas.

A male figure in his workwear sits on stool, with his cap resting on his knee, and perhaps a box of cigarettes clasped in his hand, captured at a point where he is taking a break from work. With its solid patches of colour and clearly defined forms, this striking portrait contains elements of post-impressionism, with the artist seeking to express emotions rather than just simply optical impressions. The figure looks straight at us, but his expression is kind, and there is a sense of warmth and familiarity to him.

We can just about see the view outside the window – a series of geometrical shapes alluding to houses and buildings. These geometry of angles and contrasting angles continues throughout the picture, with definitive forms and lines building up the picture.

This oil on canvas is housed in complementary slim wood frame.  There is creasing to the canvas as shown, but the painting is in good vintage condition overall.
