An emotive and visually striking abstract oil composition dated 1960, by Swedish artist John Thorgren (1918-2022), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum as well as Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
Abstract in nature, the composition explores the beauty of colour and texture, and is a visual feast for the eyes. Painted in a dance of muted colours including shades of green, blue, beige and orange, the rhythmic layers of overlapping colours have been so thoughtfully executed, and it adds a sense of dynamism to the piece.
The painting is heavily textured with areas of creamy impasto, where the paint has been applied thickly such that it stands proud from the surface, adding a beautiful raw textural quality to the work.
This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim painted wood frame. The painting has some light scattered craquelure present due to the thickness of the paint, but the paint layer is very stable overall.
