Lady in Blue

SOLD.

A fun and playful cubist line portrait composition in oil, painted in 1975.

The female figure’s form has been rapidly distilled into lines of dynamic shape and movement. A style of drawing /painting used by artists like Picasso and Matisse, line art is a tool for the artist to work out complicated ideas, crystallising them with brilliant virtuosity into linear form. Today the influence of line art is everywhere and can be regarded as one of the fundaments of an almost infinitely versatile graphic language. It can be seen not only in the works of countless artists, but also in graphic design, advertising, animation, and equally at home in a viral gif, on a billboard or in museums or galleries.

Here the artist has also condensed his palette down very effectively into shades of one colour – blue. Beyond the black outline, the picture retains its sense of depth and space through the skilful use of the varying gradients of blue.

This painting is housed in a simple silver frame that suits it very well, and is in very good vintage condition. There are some minor scuffs to the frame which do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.
