An absolutely stunning and delicate coastal cityscape of La Rochelle in France, executed in oil and dated 1963. This artwork has been painted in a semi-abstract manner, as the city skyline reflects wonderfully in the waters surrounding it.
Composed with a restrained colour palette comprising subtle shades of light blue, grey and yellow – the work is imbued with a sense of calmness and tranquility.
The artist shows off his painterly skills, displaying both the use of fine brushwork as well as the use of a palette knife – giving the work a lightly textured and smooth surface.
Additionally, there is also a thin layer of varnish that coats the surface of the painting. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
This oil on board is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a complementary gilt frame with a linen lining. There are some scuffs and marks on the painting are typical for a mid century painting.
