A large and very well executed mid century modernist still life in oil, painted onto canvas and dated 1954.

Painted in an expressionist style with rich and vivid colouring and broad brushwork, this composition features a houseplant in its centre, with a range of other objects to the lower left. The artist has chosen to focus on the form of the potted plant, creating a wonderful pattern with the shape and colour of the leaves. We get a sense that the use of colour and brushwork here is highly personal to the artist, incorporating an emotional response to the view before him with simplified colours and definitive forms.

The use of gestural brushstrokes against the white negative space of the canvas gives the painting a sense of space and depth, as well as drawing attention to the textural quality of the paint.

This oil on canvas is housed in a stunning ridged wood frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
