Drying the Nets

A wonderfully painted everyday scene of a lively fishing village in Skane, Sweden, painted in 1946.

It is a cloudy day, and a group of fishermen have just returned from sea. As they are assessing their catch of the day, washing their fishing nets, and hanging it out to dry, a woman and and her child curiously come by to see what they’ve caught.

Painted in rich pastel tones of purple, blue and pink, the colours are vibrant and welcoming, and harmonise well together. The expressionistic and forceful brushstrokes that have been executed confidently imbue the painting with much vigour and liveliness.

Painted in oil on to board, it is housed in an ornate gilt frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some staining to the bottom right edge, as shown in images.
