Church of Varengeville

A beautiful expressionist oil of the landscape of Varengeville, a commune in the Normandy region in northern France. Featuring prominently in this composition is the small church of Saint-Valery, which sits by the side of the cliff along the Alabaster coast, under the early morning light. Interestingly, the churchyard holds the tomb of the Cubist artist Georges Braque, who was inspired and mesmerised by Varengeville and lived there for many years. In this painting, the artist has used a wonderful array of light and pastel colours to capture the landscape, creating a post impressionist feel.

The painting is housed in an elegant gilt frame, which illuminates the painting beautifully. Both the painting and its frame are in very good vintage condition, with only some minor scuffing to the far corners of the frame.
