An outstanding and visually striking mid century abstract oil painting by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

Using a restrained palette comprising shades of blue, black, green and white, large sweeping gestural brushstrokes fill the surface, creating a palpable sense of movement and dynamism. Abstract in composition, the artist has focused on texture and colour, creating a wonderful depth and interest through the use of layers of colour and texture. Osswald has added an aggregate to the paint, creating very distinct impasto and a three dimensional effect.

This oil on board is housed in a well-suited grey wood frame with an inner silver window. There are some water marks to the left side of the painting, although it looks like this might have occurred during the time of painting and not afterwards, so it might be intentional on the artist’s part. Overall, both the painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
