    Large planes and blocks of colour in a deep and rich palette have been applied to the canvas, with a distinct focus on the formal qualities of shape, form and colour. The artist has used angled lines and geometric shapes to compose the figure. He has left out realistic details, and has  abstracted the portrait he has painted. He celebrates the medium of oil, leaving visible the strokes of his large paint brush, as well as creating textured areas of impasto that contrast with the smoother planes of painted areas.

    Largely abstract in composition, the artist focuses on colour contrasts to create a sense of depth and space and has used blocks of muted subdued tones including shades of taupe and green to form this composition.

    Upon closer inspection of the painting,  we can notice how layers of colours have been skilfully and thoughtfully applied – using cobalt blue as the starting undertone colour on the right, and burnt orange on the left.

    The artist has also used the impasto technique, using broad and expressive brushstrokes to create thick and creamy layers of paint to form a raw textural and three-dimensional effect.

    A very large and very elegant mid century portrait of a young male figure reading a book, painted in oil onto canvas.

    The artist has left the background indiscernible, removing any notion of time, place or context. This abstraction of the background conveys the fact that the figure is fully absorbed in his book, unaware of his surroundings. Similarly, we as the viewers are also drawn into the picture, fixing our gaze on the figure. His hair neatly parted, he is dressed in a deep red sweater, his book rests on his crossed legs.

    This portrait has clearly taken great artistic skill, time and consideration to execute. The colours of the painting play off each other beautifully, yet there is great balance and harmony. The deep blue of his jeans and deep red of his sweater centre the picture, while a more muted palette radiates out towards the edges.

    The painting is housed in a distressed silver frame which suits it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition overall. The painting has some light areas of craquelure, but is stable overall. There is some slight paint loss to the lower edge (as shown in the photos) due to the frame but this does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

    A bold and typically mid century 1960s abstract composition in oil, painted onto board.

    Featuring cubist influences and reminiscent of the style of works by modernist artists such as Pablo Picasso, this abstract in oil comprises a series of shapes and forms in a deep and earthy palette of green, black, brown and yellow and white. The beauty of a work like this is that is very much subject to personal interpretation – one may be able to discern the shape of a snail, but this may not be the case for everyone, some may see a pair of acorns perhaps. Alternatively, it may be a purely abstract composition altogether, and not representative of anything in reality.
