  • Twilight

    Sold

    SOLD.

An expressive and dramatic mid century coastal landscape composition, executed in oil in a semi-abstract manner.

Upon first glance, our eyes are drawn to the left side of the painting, where we see a house set within a rocky landscape. This crescendo in the composition then eases downwards as our eyes shift across the landscape towards to the right, where we then catch a glimpse of the sea and the horizon beyond. Our eyes are then carried upwards, towards the lighter but still very moody sky.

Expressive and painterly brushstrokes fill the canvas, and the artist has used a restrained palette, focusing our attention on the dramatic composition. There is something nostalgic and mysterious about the piece that we think really sets it apart.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original mid century frame with very detailed borders that draw our eyes inwards towards the painting.

  • Harbour Boardwalk

    Sold

    SOLD.

A soothing semi-abstract mid century oil painting depicting a coastal harbour. The painting is well balanced with equal visual weight as boats sit on the left on the artwork, and 2 figures strolling on a connecting boardwalk are painted on the right.

The painting demonstrates great depth and width – brought forth by the long multi-directional brushstrokes that sweep across the painting gracefully, as well as through the use of contrasting lively colour that sit beside and layer upon one another beautifully.

This oil on board is housed in a very complementary robust grainy wood frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Looking On

    Sold

    SOLD.

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and striking mid century oil on canvas, housed within a gorgeous wide profile wood frame.

Broad, loose brushstrokes, vibrant colours, and narrative elements are all features of this large composition.  There are several details to notice in this expressive painting  – an archipelago boat sails on the water, with a large white bird swooping towards it. A small figure in black stands to the lower central section, and to the right edge we see a the side profile of a larger figure, looking on towards the scene.

It seems that this is a memory of a scene that the artist has painted, rather than something that is taking place before him. The emotive style of brushwork and colour denotes an expression of feeling, rather than reality. The artist has gone beyond the depiction of external nature and has instead given form to an inner vision.

The raw, almost unfinished appearance, combined with the swirls of paint in rich colours bears influences of the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch, who was also known to paint subject matter which was symbolist in content, depicting a state of mind rather than an external reality.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame which suits it perfectly. The frame shows off its wood grain beautifully, and is further enhanced by an inner gilt window. The painting is in good vintage condition, with some minor surface scuffs and marks typical for a piece of this age. The frame has some surface paint losses to the inner window.

A wonderfully bold and textured mid century oil, painted in 1969. The artist has applied thick layers of creamy oil paint in an expressive manner, creating this wonderful canal composition. A saturated colour palette of blues, greens, reds, and browns make up this dynamic picture, where a row of old buildings set the backdrop for a river with boats.

The oil on canvas is housed in a thick wood frame which suits it very well, picking up beautifully on the colours within the painting. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Coastal Memories

    Sold

    SOLD.

This expressive and atmospheric mid century oil on board depicts an abstracted coastal scene with figures. There is a sketch-like quality to the painting, with the figures and structures outlined in thin black strokes, which were probably done free hand on the spot as the artist sketched ‘en plein air’.  A distinctly cool colour palette has been used, including blue, green and purple, imbuing the painting with a calming and relaxing feel. The abstracted, suffused nature of the painting gives us the sense that this is almost a hazy memory, perhaps of good times spent by the coast. There is also a rawness to the quality of the painting – we can see the distinct and coarse brush that the artist has used in many areas, where it has also created areas of impasto (where the paint is thick enough to stand proud of the surface), creating a very textured surface.

The painting is housed in a thin gilt frame, which suits the painting very well. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A really sweet and calm painting of two figures rowing in a lake. To the right we see a boat house with a small pier, probably from which the two figures came. The colours used in the picture are rich and vibrant, and the style is almost childlike, creating an air of innocent simplicity.

The painting is housed in a very unique frame, which as a woven lined border and an inner gilt window. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Venice

    Sold

    SOLD.

This exceptional oil depicts a serene setting of a Venice canal. Our gaze is immediately drawn to the centre of the painting where a boat with an orange sail dominates. The sun casts its light on part of the sail, showing off its vibrant amber and yellow colours. Our eyes are then left to explore the surrounding activity – the silhouettes of people to the left of the canal, the buildings and landmarks beyond, and the clear waters with hints of green running through.

This mid century oil is in good vintage condition with only some minor scuffs to the frame.

    Size: 47 x 55 cm (including frame)

  • Fishing Huts

    Sold

    SOLD.

A fun, playful, mid century Swedish oil, painted on board in a Naïve style (Naïve art is characterised by childlike simplicity of execution and vision. As such it has been valued by modernists seeking to get away from what they see as the insincere sophistication of art created within the traditional system).

A row of red fishing huts line the fishing lake, and behind them we see the forest, and mountains and the salmon pink sky. To the left stands a cheerful figure, adding a wonderful playfulness to the composition.

The painting is currently unframed and is painted onto very sturdy board. It has surface wear around the outermost edges (as shown in photos) where it was previously framed. A new frame would cover these marks. You could also choose to display in its current state on an easel or leant against a shelf. Should you wish to have it framed and would like our assistance, you can contact us via email info@discerningpalette.com.

  • After the Storm

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beautifully emotive abstract oil on canvas, painted in 1983.

This impressionist oil captures the misty, foggy feel of the landscape after a heavy storm. Reminiscent of later works by the impressionist artist JMW Turner, this artwork too dispenses the use of hard outlines and any artificial divisions of the visual field that we see in more traditional approaches of realistic painting. Instead, greater prominence is given to the effects of light and atmosphere. Instead of painting the landscape as is, the artist has captured the experience of how we might take in the landscape before us. Smooth. wide brushstrokes sweep across the canvas, in varying layers of blended colour. The sky softly falls upon the darker murkier landscape – we know that soon the heaviness of the post-storm air will dissipate and the light will come again.

The painting is housed in an elegant gilt frame that complements it and adds an illuminating effect. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • The Barge

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large mid century oil painting on canvas depicting a narrow boat and a rowing boat on a river in winter.

There is a beautiful quietness to this scene – it captures the essence of  a cold, crisp winter morning.  The water is perfectly still, and quite possibly icy. We see the crisp reflection of the blue rowing boat in the water. Soft, white snow covers the banks of the river. A black barge is docked on the left side, with a blue rowing boat sitting quietly beside it, its tether hidden by the water.

The artist has been brave in his painting approach and has not shied away from painting a large proportion of the composition (i.e. the river) in a dark colour. But this does not depress the mood of the painting. Rather, it skilfully directs our eyes’ journey. We are initially drawn to the dark river, where the paint is smooth and untextured, but our eyes are then directed up the river and towards the upper half of the picture, where we see the snow and sky. This area of the painting has been painted very differently – with areas of textured impasto and more movement (in contrast to the very still, smooth river). These differing painting techniques give it its unique character, and add depth and interest to the painting.

The painting is housed in a wide profile frame that complements it perfectly. As shown in the photos, here are two small punctures to the left corner (where the black barge is) but this is not noticeable unless closely inspected.  There is a small loss to the middle section of the upper half (also shown in close up photo) but again this is not noticeable unless closely inspected. The colour palette of the painting hides these imperfections well. Please note that in close up of the river, there is some photographic glare due to dark palette. Please view the side-view photos to see the painting without any glare.

  • Low Tide

    Sold

    SOLD.

An outstanding and striking modernist style painting depicting 2 boats left ashore on a quiet beach.

Dark outlines and bold vivid colours have been used to beautifully give rise to the various forms; and the artist has skilfully used flat planes of contrasting colours to create a sense of depth and three-dimensionality within the painting.

The long and smooth brushstrokes evoke an overall sense of calm, and there is a lovely transition from the sand to the ocean to the sky.

This oil on board is housed in a robust wooden frame. There are areas of dents and paint loss on the frame (as shown in the images), but both artwork and frame are in good vintage condition overall.

  • Coastal Colour

    Sold

    SOLD.

An energetic and atmospheric mid century coastal landscape composition,  executed in oil on canvas.

Rendered in a semi abstract and expressionist manner, the artist has skilfully layered planes of contrasting rich colour tones to create depth and interest within this panoramic coastal scape.

Although the broad brushstrokes have been executed in a seemingly loose and rapid manner, they are thoughtful and precise. The lively colour hues give way to this uplifting and energising work.

This oil on canvas is in good vintage condition, with some very minor surface marks typical for an oil of this age. It is housed in its original mid century gilt frame. The frame has some minor marks and scuffs which do not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Coast in Blue

    Sold

    SOLD.

A spirited mid century semi abstract oil, painted onto canvas.

Using a restrained palette, the artist has captured the ever changing nature of the coastal landscape and sky – broad, expressive brushstrokes capture the impression of its movement and its transience.

We are able to discern a row of ships far into the distance, but these bend beautifully into the overall composition. There is a satisfying cohesiveness in the picture between the foreground, middle, and background – the coastal rocks, water, ships and sky unify through the brushwork and colour palette.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame which complements it wonderfully. The inner gilt window illuminates the panting and brings out its palette and tone.  The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has a small mark to the top edge of the gilt section, as shown in the photos.

  • Construct

    Sold

    SOLD.

This large and very well executed mid century oil on canvas is particularly reminiscent of the St Ives school of Modern British art. Although Swedish in its provenance, it is likely that the artist was also inspired by the coastal areas of Sweden, just like the St Ives artists were by the British coastal town of St Ives. Although largely abstract in its composition, we can just about discern coastal elements – the lower half of the painting depicts the sandy shore, and in the middle section of blue we see the water as well as the triangular shape of the sail of boat, and finally the light greyish green of the sky. The artist has chosen to focus on the shape, forms,  and colours of the coast as his source of inspiration. Even the textural qualities of the painting which includes areas of sgraffito (the technique of scratching the painted surface to reveal the underlying colours and layers) captures the rough and raw quality of the sandy, rocky landscape. The painting also captures the ‘light’ of the coastal area and has a luminosity in its palette and overall appearance.

The canvas is surrounded by slim wood slats, which then sit within an outer white floating box frame.  This unique framing suits the piece wonderfully.   There is scattered craquelure to the painting as shown in the photos, but the surface is very stable.

  • Coastal Skies

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beautiful and throughly well-executed expressionist style coastal scape depicting  a row of boats docked near the shore at sunrise, painted in oil and dated 1973.

The colours and brushstrokes in this painting are a visual feast for the eyes. Energetic and swift brushstrokes have been executed so confidently as they sweep across the canvas, adding a light layer of texture as well as a dynamic touch to the painting; and the vibrant colour palette including green, pink, and blue hues imbue the work with a lively and uplifting feel.

The artist shows off his painterly skills by not only managing to arrest motion and capture the atmospheric qualities of the sky, and also wonderfully captures the reflection of the colours from the boat and sky cast on the water’s surface.

This oil on canvas painting is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a gilt frame with red undertones. There are some surface marks and scuffs (as shown in the images) on the frame, however this does not detract from its overall attractiveness and is in line with its vintage charm.

  • Fairfield

    Sold

    SOLD.

A tranquil and visually calming mid century modernist landscape composition, painted in oil onto board.

Realistic details have intentionally been left out, as the artist reconstructs this nature landscape in a semi-abstract manner through the used of soft colours, flattened forms and expressive brushstrokes. The artist has intentionally left some areas of the substrate showing through, allowing us to see the materiality of the canvas surface, further emphasising the modernist ethos behind his brush.

The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame which illuminates the painting wonderfully. There is some age toning to the left edge of the surface. Otherwise, the painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame, which is a robust light wood frame with a wide profile and visible grain. There is a also a green edging to the frame (as shown), which adds a lovely effect. The painting has some overall scattered craquelure, typical for a painting of this age.

  • Coastal Houses

    Sold

    SOLD.

A charming and scenic mid century oil painting presenting a view of houses lined by a coastal front. As evening sets, hues of pink fill the sky and the shimmering blue water is beaming with serenity.

Working with a modernist ethos in mind, the artist has intentionally chosen not to focus on realistic details, and instead explores the use of colours, brushstrokes and form to create a sense of depth and space.

Lively colours and expressive multi-directional brushstrokes have been used extensively in this work, producing distinct forms and breathing life into this overall striking composition.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a rustic wood frame with an inner linen lining . There are some watermarks on the frame as shown in the images but does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Sicily

    Sold

    SOLD.

A picturesque and well balanced landscape view of the pearl of the Mediterranean, Taormina in Sicily.  The artist has beautifully captured the archetypal Mediterranean atmosphere, with a palm tree standing tall to the left, the local floral and fauna stretching across the canvas, and the view of the blue sea into the distance. The pastel colour palette creates a very calming atmosphere within the picture, enhanced by the small and soft impressionist brushstrokes which are reminiscent of works by the pointillist artist Georges Seurat.

The painting is housed in a distressed cream and gilt frame which suits it perfectly, and both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Coast

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and striking mid century abstract oil, painted on to canvas.

Although largely abstract in style, we are still able to discern that the artist is depicting a landscape. We are able to make out a tree to the left most edge of the composition, as well as a house that sits behind it. Larges swathes of deep and saturated colour line the bottom half of the canvas, making up the foreground of the picture. Beyond that, different shades of blue indicate the sea and then the sky. The artist has used contrasting colours and texture to create a sense of depth and space.

This large oil is housed in a very complementary rustic frame, which suits it wonderfully. This painting would fit well in both classic and contemporary interiors. Its large size and expressive use of colour make it a real statement piece. The painting and frame are in good vintage condition. There are some scattered areas of craquelure, but the paint layer is stable overall.

  • Spring Garden

    Sold

    SOLD.

A delightful and lively picturesque landscape composition, executed in oil in 1948.

The painting depicts a partial view of a balcony overlooking a well-manicured garden filled with colourful blooms and lush trees, as well as views of the calm blue sea that lies beyond it. The white chair in the foreground as well as garden furniture in the middle of the painting are empty, almost inviting and tempting the viewer to take a seat and enjoy the charming spring view.

Executed with expressive and painterly brushstrokes in vibrant and saturated colours including green and orange, this artwork is sure to brighten any interior setting and uplift one’s mood.

This oil on canvas is housed in a beautifully patterned wood frame with carvings. There are light scattered areas of craquelure (fine cracks in the paint, commensurate with its age), as well as a small area of paint loss along the left edge of the work (as shown in the photos). Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring.

  • Red House

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

This striking modernist oil painting features bold earthy colours and confident, painterly brushwork. There is an expressiveness in the way in which the artist has painted the landscape –  reflecting the ruggedness of the landscape and the old red houses.  Flat planes of contrasting colour create a sense of depth, and areas of the substrate have been left uncoloured – a reminder of the distinctly modernist ethos that a painting, before it is a landscape of houses and mountains, is first and foremost a set of colours and forms arranged in a certain order on a flat surface.

The painting is housed in a typically mid century wood frame, with a lined lined border and a gilded inner window. It has some scattered areas of paint loss, as well as at the top corners of the board, but due to the style of the work the paint losses are not remarkable. The painting is otherwise in good vintage condition.

  • Chalk & Blue

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beautifully textured coastal oil painting. The artist has used a palette knife to apply the paint, creating areas of impasto (where the paint is applied thickly such that it stands proud from the surface). The artist has worked the paint dynamically, using quick and successive strokes to create this expressive and tactile piece. A soothing palette of blues, greens, whites, with orange and yellow details, imbues this painting with a thoroughly calming effect, and makes one think of lake holidays in the summertime.

The oil on canvas is housed in a very complementary wood and gilt frame. It is in very good vintage condition.

A lovely bright riverscape view, painted in oil in 1957. The artist has used distinct, expressive brushstrokes throughout, giving us the sense that this was painted ‘en plein air’ (the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view). The artist has incorporated natural light, colour, and movement into this work, capturing the spirit of the river as it flows through the city. A set of steps can be seen to the right, encouraging us to imagine ourselves having just walked down, taking respite from the hustle and bustle of the busy city above.
