A brilliantly executed and playful figurative composition with abstract qualities, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1950.
Depicting a group of figures gathered at a quay, the painting hints at a narrative, inviting viewers to speculate the nature of their gathering.
Containing elements of geometric abstraction, the artist has intentionally chosen not to depict the figures and the surrounding environment realistically and has instead reduced them to blocks of shapes in contrasting colours. The different shapes have been carefully juxtaposed against one another, creating a wonderful interplay of uplifting colours that heightens the visual impact of the composition, and imbues it with a sense of liveliness.
This oil on stretched canvas is unframed. There are some very small scattered areas of paint loss, as shown, but these are not immediately noticeable due to the style of the piece. The paint layer is stable, and the overall appearance is very good.
