    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

Part of our ‘family series’ collection, this very large mid century oil has been painted onto board and depicts a standing figure painted in a modernist style.

Large planes and blocks of colour in a deep and rich palette have been applied to the canvas, with a distinct focus on the formal qualities of shape, form and colour. The artist has used angled lines and geometric shapes to compose the figure. He has left out realistic details, and has  abstracted the portrait he has painted. He celebrates the medium of oil, leaving visible the strokes of his large paint brush, as well as creating textured areas of impasto that contrast with the smoother planes of painted areas.

This large modernist portrait has been excellently executed, and would make a very prominent statement piece in any interior.

The painting is housed in its original mid century grey wood frame with an inner silver window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffs but is in good condition overall. Due to the large size and heaviness of the board, the frame will need to be handled carefully when hanging. Please note that there is some glare in the photographs as the images were taken under natural light.

    Size:  92 x 79 cm (including frame)

  • Interlink

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large emotive and powerful acrylic on board, painted in 1975.

Abstract in nature, the painting focuses our attention on non-objective artistic elements such as  colour, line, shape and form.

Executed in bold primary colours of blue, red and yellow, expressive lines and geometric shapes interlink with one another to define this space on the canvas and form an aesthetically striking and well-balanced pattern.

As the work does not represent visual reality, the artist has instead used the respective elements to emphasise his inner feelings and emotion. With its saturated colours and dynamic forms that add a highly energetic feel as well as being close to a meter in height, this painting will make a statement piece in any interior.

This acrylic on board is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original wood frame that has some marks and scuffs (as shown in the images)

  • Mother and Baby Girl

    Sold

    SOLD.

Part of our ‘family series’ collection, this mid century oil has been painted onto board and depicts a mother with a bowl, feeding a baby girl.

A depiction of the wonderful (albeit sometimes frustrating) everyday scene of feeding a young child, which is familiar to anyone who has had a young baby. A mother sits close to her child, with the bowl of food set out and her baby in front of her.

The artist has captured this everyday scene beautifully, using a vivid and bold colour palette, and incorporating areas of thick impasto for added effect and three dimensionality. The features of the figures have been left out, focusing instead on the shape and form of the figures and the bowl, giving this painting a timelessness, which coincides beautifully with the ‘timelessness’ of raising children and all that comes with it.

The painting is housed in its original mid century deep profile frame, with an outer wood section and a protruding gilt window. The frame has some minor scuffs but this does not detract from its overall appeal. The painting is in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Tree Line

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very expressive but restful landscape scene in oil, painted in 1977.

This piece is excellently executed, with skilful blending of post impressionist colour to create this landscape composition. Creamy, textured areas of paint have been layered and blended, encouraging our eyes to dance around the canvas and soak up the painterly details. The subject of the composition is wonderful to rest tired eyes on – a tree lined path in the rural countryside leads into the horizon, with clear skies up above. There is a sense that the artist might have been painting ‘en plein air’, capturing an emotional response to the landscape, as opposed to realistically depicting it.

The painting is housed in a dark wood frame with an inner gilt window that really brings out its colours. The painting would make a fabulous statement piece in a living room or bedroom. The painting is in very good condition. The frame has some very minor scuffs but this certainly does not detract from its overall appeal.

  • Fields of Gold

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking expressionist mid century landscape in oil, painted onto canvas.

Using a lively palette comprising shades of yellow, white, grey and touches of pink and green, the artist has used short and painterly brushstrokes to create this uplifting yet relaxing composition. A fence is depicted running through lush yellow fields, with a gate opening in the middle of the landscape.

Upon having a close-up look at the painting, one can notice the artist’s display of painterly skills – as he wonderfully layers colours upon one another to create this outstanding and lightly textured composition.

This oil on canvas painting is housed in a simple white painted wood frame, which suits it very well and gives it a slightly more contemporary edge. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition

The objects and buildings have been defined by dark thin outlines, drawing our attention to their individual forms and shape.

  • Wetland

    Sold

    SOLD.

An atmospheric and visually calming mid century landscape composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

The artist reconstructs this nature wetland with a foggy feel in a semi-abstract manner through the use of a restrained palette, flattened forms and painterly brushstrokes.

  • Calla Lilies in the Moonlight

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and brilliantly executed mid century still life in oil, painted in 1948.

A group of fluted flowers sit within a simple cylindrical vase on a windowsill. The way in which the artist has painted the moonlight streaming in gives this painting its distinctly cinematic quality.  The glow of the flowers underneath the moonlight add to this dramatic effect. The colour palette has a hint of melancholia, where deep colours of blue and green repeat throughout the composition, from the flowers, to the vase they sit in , to the sill and to the window. With its richly romantic character and its delicately balanced composition, this mid century oil would definitely add something special and elevate the space it is hung in.

This oil on board is in very good vintage condition. The ornate decorative gilt frame within which it is housed suits the dramatic nature of this painting wonderfully.

  • The Vineyard

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly striking and large mid century oil landscape, painted onto canvas and framed in a simple wood frame.

Reminiscent of compositions by the very well known Modernist painter Paul Cezanne, this painting features similar brushstrokes that are ever shifting, overlapping, and breaking apart before coming back together again. The artist has used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. He showcases his adept skills and proficiency with a palette knife, creating beautiful patterns and layers of blended and unblended colour with his tool.

The painting is housed in a simple wood frame which suits it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

An endearing portrait of a mother and child, in an interior setting.

This artwork captures a tender moment of a mother lovingly looking after her baby, who is placed on her lap.

The selection of earthy colours imbues the work with a sense of warmth and a calming aesthetic, that further enhances the emotions in this scene.

The artist has selected brown as the main colour of choice for this well-decorated home setting – whereby the floor, table, chair, and cupboards are of the same colour. Despite this restrained palette, by skilfully contrasting and layering a range of shades, as well as utilising diverse brushstrokes, the artist has managed to bring out the different forms beautifully in this picture.

Just look at the way the fine close-grain pattern on the hardwood of the cupboards have been rendered with soft and precise brushstrokes – simply stunning!

The artwork is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a beautiful gilt frame with greyish-green and linen linings, as well as ornate mouldings. There are visible hairline cracks on the ornate mouldings (as shown in the images). This is a common occurrence for a frame of this age, but all parts are well in place.

This panoramic landscape is wonderfully calm and tranquil, with its expansive layout in deep blues and greens. Its long horizontal layout and restful composition would make it the perfect piece to hang above a bed. The painting has a thoroughly soothing effect.

A very large and impactful mid century oil, painted on canvas. Painted with a modernist ethos, the artist has used flat planes of contrasting colour to create a sense of space and depth. Realistic details have been intentionally left out, and the artist has chosen to focus instead on shape, form and colour. Two figures stand in front of a group of village houses, which are flanked by trees on either side. • Man with Pipe

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A monumental and brilliantly executed mid century portrait in oil, painted on to canvas.

Painted in an expressionist manner, the artist captures the sitter poignantly. A refined gentleman sits at a table smoking his pipe. His surroundings have been left abstract – there is no sense of time, space or context. Each brush stroke in this large piece has been carefully considered, applied to the canvas with purpose. Every contrasting tone has its role to play, creating a sense of depth within the picture. The composition is a feast for the eyes – our eyes are encouraged to flitter and dance across the canvas surface, taking in the colours, the sitters features, the background.

This piece would be a stand out piece in any interior, due to both its size and its excellent execution.  The piece is housed in a silver frame which complements it beautifully. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Sublime

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A stunning and emotive impressionist painting depicting a sunrise at sea, executed in oil in 1948. The artwork celebrates the beauty of nature, and is in reminiscent of works by British landscape painter JMW Turner.

Through the careful use of light and colour, the painting displays the artist’s desire to capture the natural atmospheric elements and movement of water created at that particular moment in time.

Combining both a warm and cool palette, one can notice warm light yellows and calming cool blues shifting across the painting. The effectiveness of lighting is achieved though the use of energetic and loose brushstrokes, invigorating the work a sense of dynamism.

This oil on canvas is in good vintage condition. There are light scattered areas of craquelure across the painting commensurate with its age, but the paint is in very stable condition. • At the Table

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century composition of three figures, painted in oil onto canvas.

The artist has left much to the imagination – we are able to discern figures around what appears to be a table, including a figure with a very fancy hat. The artist has used a series of bold, expressive lines, in combination with large flat planes of colour, creating a semi abstract picture that does not reveal any notion of place or time. The picture carries a palpable sense of mystery, which makes it very intriguing.

The painting is housed in a wide profile wood frame with an inner gilt window which illuminates the painting. The painting has scattered areas of craquelure (as shown), and there is a small area of paint loss ( as seen in the close up photo), but as the underlying area is a dark colour, the paint loss is fairly inconspicuous. Please note that in close ups of the painting, there is some photographic glare due to the layer of varnish over the painting. Please view the side-view photos to see the painting without any glare.

  • The Bookworm

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and very elegant mid century portrait of a young male figure reading a book, painted in oil onto canvas.

The artist has left the background indiscernible, removing any notion of time, place or context. This abstraction of the background conveys the fact that the figure is fully absorbed in his book, unaware of his surroundings. Similarly, we as the viewers are also drawn into the picture, fixing our gaze on the figure. His hair neatly parted, he is dressed in a deep red sweater, his book rests on his crossed legs.

This portrait has clearly taken great artistic skill, time and consideration to execute. The colours of the painting play off each other beautifully, yet there is great balance and harmony. The deep blue of his jeans and deep red of his sweater centre the picture, while a more muted palette radiates out towards the edges.

The painting is housed in a distressed silver frame which suits it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition overall. The painting has some light areas of craquelure, but is stable overall. There is some slight paint loss to the lower edge (as shown in the photos) due to the frame but this does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Looking On

    Sold

    SOLD.

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and striking mid century oil on canvas, housed within a gorgeous wide profile wood frame.

Broad, loose brushstrokes, vibrant colours, and narrative elements are all features of this large composition.  There are several details to notice in this expressive painting  – an archipelago boat sails on the water, with a large white bird swooping towards it. A small figure in black stands to the lower central section, and to the right edge we see a the side profile of a larger figure, looking on towards the scene.

It seems that this is a memory of a scene that the artist has painted, rather than something that is taking place before him. The emotive style of brushwork and colour denotes an expression of feeling, rather than reality. The artist has gone beyond the depiction of external nature and has instead given form to an inner vision.

The raw, almost unfinished appearance, combined with the swirls of paint in rich colours bears influences of the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch, who was also known to paint subject matter which was symbolist in content, depicting a state of mind rather than an external reality.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame which suits it perfectly. The frame shows off its wood grain beautifully, and is further enhanced by an inner gilt window. The painting is in good vintage condition, with some minor surface scuffs and marks typical for a piece of this age. The frame has some surface paint losses to the inner window.

  • Yellow Beads

    Sold

    SOLD.

A stunning mid century portrait in oil, painted onto board in 1944.

The artist has focused on the formal elements in this portrait, using shape and colour to create this distinctly modernist picture. Flat shapes interlock perfectly to create the headwear, body and clothes of the female figure. The artist intentionally leaves areas of the canvas showing through and makes his brushstrokes visible, reminding us that this portrait is one created out of formal elements of shape and colour painted on a two dimensional surface, as opposed to an imitation of reality. The bright and saturated colours give this painting a wonderful air of playfulness.

The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner off white section that has a mottled surface. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has scattered areas of paint loss but this is in keeping with the overall look of the piece.

  • Quartet

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and striking oil on canvas depicting 4 figures in a row. Painted in a distinctly modernist style, the artist has actively eliminated any fine details and has instead chosen to use distinct  brushstrokes to form most of the picture. In fact, three quarters of the picture is made up purely of multi directional brushstrokes, without any realistic details. Having said that, the detail has instead been paid to each individual brushstroke, which gives this painting a complexity that encourages us to keep looking.

This painting is housed in a large and gorgeous mid century frame which has a wood outer border, a linen lined section, followed by a deep profile gilt window and a and inner wooden slip in white. • Grandparents

    Sold

    SOLD.

Part of our ‘family series’ collection, this mid century piece has been painted in oil onto board and depicts two seated figures on chairs.

Large swathes of bold and vivid colour have been unabashedly applied to the canvas, and the artist has also incorporated areas of thick impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface, creating a three dimensional effect. The artist’s painterly style celebrates the medium of oil, encouraging our eyes to soak in his rich and vivid palette.

The figures don’t have facial features, and the background also does not to allude to any particular space. This gives the painting its timeless quality, and asks us instead to appreciate the qualities of form, shape and colour.

The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner fabric lined window. There is some minor cracking to the thick impasto area (very normal due to age) but these areas are very stable. The painting is in good vintage condition. There is some general wear and surface paint losses to the outermost edges of the frame, but this certainly does not detract from its overall appeal.

  • The Barge

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large mid century oil painting on canvas depicting a narrow boat and a rowing boat on a river in winter.

There is a beautiful quietness to this scene – it captures the essence of  a cold, crisp winter morning.  The water is perfectly still, and quite possibly icy. We see the crisp reflection of the blue rowing boat in the water. Soft, white snow covers the banks of the river. A black barge is docked on the left side, with a blue rowing boat sitting quietly beside it, its tether hidden by the water.

The artist has been brave in his painting approach and has not shied away from painting a large proportion of the composition (i.e. the river) in a dark colour. But this does not depress the mood of the painting. Rather, it skilfully directs our eyes’ journey. We are initially drawn to the dark river, where the paint is smooth and untextured, but our eyes are then directed up the river and towards the upper half of the picture, where we see the snow and sky. This area of the painting has been painted very differently – with areas of textured impasto and more movement (in contrast to the very still, smooth river). These differing painting techniques give it its unique character, and add depth and interest to the painting.

The painting is housed in a wide profile frame that complements it perfectly. As shown in the photos, here are two small punctures to the left corner (where the black barge is) but this is not noticeable unless closely inspected.  There is a small loss to the middle section of the upper half (also shown in close up photo) but again this is not noticeable unless closely inspected. The colour palette of the painting hides these imperfections well. Please note that in close up of the river, there is some photographic glare due to dark palette. Please view the side-view photos to see the painting without any glare.

  • The Matador

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century gouache and watercolour figure composition, painted in 1955.

A semi abstract depiction of a matador is the focus of this skilfully executed portrait. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on the outlines, forms, shapes and colours. Behind the figure is an abstracted background – large sections of bright colours juxtapose the figure and give it its context and sense of space and depth.  The brushwork on the figure is much more free-form in comparison to the background which is far more structured, creating a striking contrast between them both.

Painted in both gouache and watercolour onto paper, it is framed within a card mount and a solid oak wood frame. The card mount has some slight age toning and the frame has some minor scuffs typical for its age. The painting is in good vintage condition and sits behind glass, as shown.

  • Skyline Colour

    Sold

    Free UK shipping.

A very large, modernist oil on canvas, painted in 1967. Vibrant colours, bold outlines, and areas of impasto (where the paint has been applied thickly such that it stands proud from the surface) make up this large composition which features a semi abstract city skyline. The artist has played with geometric shapes and forms, while using large blocks of colour painted in an expressive manner.  The painting has a very ‘unrefined’ and ‘raw’ look and feel, typical of mid century modern paintings of this genre.

This large painting is housed in a simple wooden frame which suits it very well. The painting has some scattered areas of surface paint loss which reveal the orange painted layer below but due to the nature of the style of the painting these areas of paint loss add to its character and certainly do not detract from the appeal of the painting.
